Zac Efron is out and Nicholas Hoult is in for European-set car chase thriller “Autobahn,” according to writer/director Eran Creevey, who shared the news at the London Screenwriters Festival last month. Amber Heard is still in for the female lead role, while IM Global now lists Jean Reno as part of the cast too.

Now Hoult will take on the role of an American backpacker who takes a job as a pickup driver for a gang of German drug smugglers. Things go awry, leading him to flee from his employers in a high speed chase around Munich. Heard will play his girlfriend. Filming had been set for this fall, but will now commence in March of 2014 – that is, if they manage to keep everybody attached to the project this time. Hoult’s reps did not immediately comment on this casting.

Hoult, known for his role as Beast in “X-Men: First Class” and the upcoming “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” recently wrapped the adaptation of Gillian Flynn bestseller “Dark Places” opposite Charlize Theron. He most recently became attached to Drake Doremus’ next film, a sci-fi romance called “Equals” with Kristen Stewart.

International buyers are more than willing to follow Charlize Theron to Dark Places, as Exclusive Media racked up pre-sales deals across Europe and Asia for the feature film adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel about a brutal crime and its impact a quarter of a century later.

Exclusive, which is producing and co-financing Dark Places, closed all-rights deals for the title at AFM for France (Mars), Canada (Remstar), Japan (CCC), Scandinavia (Svensk), Switzerland (Ascot Elite) and Russia (West) among many others. Dark Places has also all but sold out across Latin America, Eastern Europe and South-East Asia.

Theron stars as Libby Day, a woman who, as a 7-year-old-girl, survived the massacre of her family. She testified against her brother as the murderer but, 25 years later, a group investigating the crime, confronts her with questions about what really happened.

Nicholas Hoult, Chloe Grace Moretz, Christina Hendricks and Drea de Matteo also star. Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key) wrote and directed Dark Places with Exclusive Media and Cuatro Plus Films providing financing.

Deadline is reporting that Nicholas and Kristen Stewart are being eyed for the lead roles in the science fiction movie Equals.

Drake Doremus is casting up his next film Equals for an early 2014 start, and I hear he is courting The Twilight Saga‘s Kristen Stewart and Warm Bodies and X-Men: Days Of Future Past star Nicholas Hoult to be the young couple that anchors this science fiction tale penned by Nathan Parker (Moon).

Doremus talked up the project while doing press for Breathe In, the most recent film he helmed that stars his Like Crazy heroine Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce and Amy Ryan. Indian Paintbrush, Steven Rales’ production/financing company that forged a relationship with Doremus on Like Crazy, is backing the film.

Stewart is repped by Gersh and Hoult by UTA and 42.

Dark Places, the feature adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel starring Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron (Monster), Nicholas Hoult, Chloë Grace Moretz, Emmy Award-nominated actress Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Corey Stoll and Tye Sheridan commenced principal photography this week on location in Shreveport, Louisiana.

Dark Places is written and directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner (Sarah’s Key), and is co-financed by Exclusive Media and Cuatro Plus Films. Exclusive Media is producing with Stephane Marsil of Hugo Films, Charlize Theron’s Denver and Delilah Productions partners Beth Kono and AJ Dix; and Mandalay’s Cathy Schulman and Matt Rhodes. Exclusive Media’s Matt Jackson will produce, with the company’s Guy East, Nigel Sinclair, Tobin Armbrust and Alex Brunner Executive Producing. Peter Safran will also serve as an Executive Producer.

Dark Places tells the story of Libby Day (Theron), a woman who, at the age of 7, survives the massacre of her family and testifies against her brother as the murderer. Twenty-five years later, a group obsessed with solving notorious crimes confronts her with questions about the horrific event. Told in a series of flashbacks from the points of view of Libby’s mother, Patty, and her brother, Ben, Libby is forced to revisit that fateful day and begins to question what exactly she saw – or didn’t see – the night of the tragedy.

Rounding out the cast alongside Theron, Hoult, Moretz, Hendricks, Toll and Sheridan are supporting cast members Sterling Jerins, who will play Young Libby, and Shannon Kook.
